He has continued as an inventor through a corporate R&D career at Texas Instruments and Corning, as a technical consultant for Fortune 500 companies and small businesses, and now has over 19 U.S. patents issued or pending.
His areas of particular technical depth encompass optical and photonic devices and systems including fiber optics and planar waveguides, lasers and nonlinear optics, electronics and microtechnology (integrated circuits and MEMS), image sensors and displays, circuit and networking technology, semiconductor, electronic and photonic packaging, and nanotechnology, and the interfaces between these disciplines.
Dr. Magel has served on corporate patent committees, performed technical and IP due diligence in M&A transactions, engaged in patent portfolio licensing and acquisitions, formulated patent strategy, acted as a liaison between C-level officers and patent counsel, written patent applications and responses to office actions, and performed prior art searches. As Vice President of Technology for an optical networking equipment startup, he guided corporate intellectual property strategy, strengthened the existing portfolio with further filings, orchestrated foreign filings, and established an invention disclosure and patent award process, while setting research priorities and leading proof-of-concept technical development.
